The first appointment lasts for an hour and a half to enable me to understand your symptoms fully on a deep level. This is the time for you to talk about your complaints and how they effect your day to day life. It also allows me the time to gather all the information I require to find your remedy.

I have been practising Homoeopathy in Bath for over thirty years andfeel as passionate about it now as I did at the beginning, if not more so. Every year brings new ideas, new avenues to explore, new patients and a deeper understanding of Homoeopathy and the process and development of disease.

For twenty five years I have been teaching Homoeopathy in the UK and around the world. Lecturing has taken me to several countries in Europe as well as Ireland, Scandanavia, the USA,Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Japan. It is a joy to share my knowledge with students of so many nationalities. Giles CleghornLiz (Manager of NYR Therapy rooms) has asked me to write something to help you understand how I practice so-called “osteopathy” I say so-called, as the name osteopathy is very misleading. I treat the whole person and the whole body so it might be better to call it “wholepersonopathy” not osteopathy. The practice of osteopathy includes the spiritual, emotional, mental, environmental, dietary and physical aspects of a patient.



I start, like most practitioners with the case history but to me the case history is the person’s presence in the room. They will talk about what they think is wrong with them.  But my job is to see, sense and feel what is wrong with them. The patients story and thoughts about their problem might be very far from what I perceive is wrong and what is needed to be corrected to help them get well. This is the art of being a practitioner.


I have learnt to read the patients body and being in many of its gross and subtle expressions.  I spend time in analyzing the expression of the body’s anatomy and physiology.  I look for distortions in the alignment of the physical form. This includes the muscles ligaments and bones but also includes the organs and how they rest inside the body. I look at how the organs are functioning and if there are any obstructions to them doing their job.


One of the most important aspects that an osteopath should look at is what the founder Dr. A T Still called the “rule of the artery”. By this he meant the free flow and irrigation form the blood to the tissues throughout the whole body. This includes the brain, the organs and the musculo-skeletal system. He meant not only the blood in an artery but the free return through the veins and the lymphatic vessels back to the heart. The more important aspect of the “rule of the artery” is the fact that, the blood and lymph not only impart oxygen and nutrition and carry away waist but the fluids also impart essential subtle information. which informs the cells about their role. Traveling in the fluids are the immune cells and proteins (antibodies).  As well this there are also electromagnetic waves and energies that have a major role in the regulation of cellular health. All the body is made up of cells so each cell needs full contact with the heart through the fluids at all times to maintain health.


The emotional and mental expressions of a person are also readable. Long term and negative emotions and mental habits have an impact on the body’s functions. Emotion and metal activity have an electromagnetic signature in tissue, which I can read through my hands. Form experience I have learnt that there are certain target areas in the body where some typical emotions tend to lodge themselves.


The magic of the art of osteopathy is in the ability of a patient to transform these misalignments disturbances on the “rule of the artery” and the emotional entrapments while and because an osteopath has their hands upon them. How this works we can but speculate. But over an over I have witnessed great changes in my patient’s health  and being, for which, I am and they are eternally grateful.

Rolfing – what’s that?

MZ work photoRolfing, Structural Integration or Structural body work,  all sound very mysterious and related to some kind of engineering rather than this remarkable deep tissue treatment; which does the obvious – brings ease into our bodies by lengthening areas that have become short and tight.  Ida Rolf the American scientist who came up with the treatment was all about structure enabling function or expression. Her first clients were physically handicapped children whom she had great success with, improving their movements and neurology by working on their postural alignment.

We can all imagine a skeleton with bones perfectly placed in relationship to each other, joints that are congruent, and vertebrae that balance nicely on one another.  Then add the next layer of muscles moving the bones as equally balanced pulleys ( the doing muscles), or playing a supportive role around the vertebrae – maintaining our upright posture (postural muscles). 

Then take a look around and see the myriad of postures held by different people, that have migrated from uprightness to stooped, forwards shoulders, protruding neck that gives you tension headaches, and a spine that has lost its original curves to result in a weak lumbar spine that can no longer cope with hours of sitting or driving – with a continual throb of chronic pain. 

Key to Rolfing is a postural analysis which  examines the horizontality of your feet, knees, hips and shoulders. and systematically works to put right relationship back in your body by lengthening key areas of connective tissue and muscles around the body that have shortened, in a way akin to a very deep tissue massage.  In the process muscular aches, chronic pain and stiffness disappear, you grow an inch or so, and your yoga practice improves with your alignment.  You become more comfortable in your own skin and have greater ease of movement. 

By the age of 40, most of us have accumulated various muscular imbalances;  through – injuries and areas of shortened scar tissue; vocation – e.g. long haul truck drivers whose arms are held in the forwards position for hours a day such that attempting full circumduction at the shoulder joint is no longer possible; or through age where gravity has got the better of you and is pulling you into a stoop compromising various parts of your spine as it does so.

Very popular in North America, this treatment protocol works in obvious simplicity to restore postural alignment, and give us as we age that incredible extra quality of life – physical freedom.  That is not to say that a proactive approach and participation is not also needed, of taking exercise and movement classes to consolidate changes and strengthen up formerly weak areas.  So give Rolfing a go if pain or movement restrictions are plaguing you.  For more information please visit www.mztherapy.com.
